The Wood Between the Worlds

Occasionally people ask how goes the unemployment gig? Well, how about a little update.

When this adventure was launched I felt rather exhilarated (see the “Altoids” article for details). But I knew that things would settle down and sure enough, they have. Now we play the waiting game, constructive waiting I hope (making a good job hunt effort), but waiting none the less.

When I’m tempted to feel like I’ll never get out of this current state of waiting for the next Big Step, I look back on the lay off and feel comforted; I really do. For I know that God graciously answered my prayers to get out in the world and start doing what I was made to do. He overcame my comfort and complacency and made it very clear that I no longer needed to stay in the old job: It was time to move on.

Cool!

Maybe this was how Digory felt when he first put on the yellow ring.

Bow Before Me for I am ROOT!

Author’s note: The following article was originally an email sent April 21, 2004

Some web sites are a wealth of knowledge. Take ThinkGeek.com for example–which by the way, is an excellent choice when looking for a gift for that adorable geek in your life (did I tell you that my birthday is coming up?? hint, hint, nudge, nudge wink.)

When ever I read the T-shirts sold at Think Geek, I always walk away saying “hugh??” It’s not until a true UberGeek does some translation for me that I get it and then most of them are hysterically funny! But what I really get out of Think Geek and Slash Dot and other Geek sites is that I get a peek into the psyche of computer geeks.

Take the title of this article, “Bow Before Me for I am ROOT!!” It took a UNIX administrator explaining it to me before I could appreciate it — and I literally LOL! (translation: Laugh Out Loud).

Simply put, “root” access means you have complete power over a UNIX server. UNIX servers pretty much run the internet. They are big computers, really big. The kind that contain really big and really important information, like payroll stuff, or client data, or beanie baby sales–all kinds of really important stuff.

As root, you can do anything you want on a UNIX server. You are “god” of that server, Lord of its entire dominion — and of course you must be very smart. After all, you have “root” access. ;-)

So, bow before me, nave!

… Cocoa signs up for a “Distance Learning”course

Author’s note: This was originally an email sent June 18, 2005. I buried it in the archives of this blog but when I came across it today and thought I would put it on the front page. Somehow I feel like God is doing a little “distance learning” to me, what with being laid off and all. Am I a lot more attentive to His “still, small voice” these days? Oh, yeah!

Did I tell you that we have a dog? I think that I did, but if not, some day I’ll delve into the redemptive analogies of dog ownership, like being rescued from the fiery furnace, so to speak. You see we got her from an animal shelter.

Cocoa is a good dog overall. She is bright as far as dogs go, and quite obedient, except for one area of her life: when other dogs are near by. That is when mass quantities of stupidity break out. Take our next-door neighbor’s dog for instance. Every time, I mean EVERY time the two of them see each other, World War III erupts K-9 style. Thankfully there is a chain link fence to separate them. But despite the fence, oh, the snarling! The snapping and growling! And bearing of teeth while racing up and down the fence line!! At least my neighbor’s dog breaks off and goes inside when she is called, but my dog? NooOOoo. She has to keep at it snarling and nipping while I stand there like a fool, yelling my head off. “Cocoa, come! COCOA!!! COME!!” Yeah, like that’ll ever happen.

What in the world do I have to do to get her attention?! Think, man, think. Free your mind… Something clever, something gadgety, and geeky. Ah, ha! Perfect!

You like? This “theme” is called “modern paper”– and you will notice that it is 180 degrees different from dfire theme I had up for the last few days. Modern Paper is less flashy, yet maintains the “recently written” feature and other nice navigation tools–and it is more easy to read.

As for this theme, it’s not done yet. My now 13 year old is going to create a new banner for me to make this theme more “mine” in a small way. It’s not as glitzy as I like but the overall look is clean and the features are awesome!

once again… PLEASE give me your feedback

“Altoid” Theology–or A New Adventure

“Hey Scott, you got an Altoid?”

Scott introduced me to the potent little breath mints. I figured he probably had plenty to spare. He looked up at me from his cubicle and I could tell right away that something was wrong.

“Dude, you look like you are having a bad day,” I said.

“You don’t know the half of it,” Scott replied. “They just laid off Vince–and then Rob!”

“Oh, man, that’s not good. I’m very sorry to hear that. Well…ah, the reason why I asked for an Altoid is that I have a meeting with my manager in about 3 minutes…”

Scott looked up at me again as if to say not you too!

“Cafe Mocha” theology

Yesterday, I took my usual and customary walk (well, it’s more or less “usual”). I was praying and thinking and listening to a lot of worship music mainly from Chris Tomlin when I realized something: I’m not anxious right now!

whoa…. that’s … unexpected, and weird (especially in view of my current situation: read “Head on Platter” for more detials). Kind of like peace and a sense that everything’s going to be alright.

It wasn’t exactly what I would call Total Bliss but more the sense that I can handle my situations, because I can really tell that God is here with me.

What brought about this change, I wondered. Hmmm. Could it have been the endorphins raised by the aerobic exercise? Maybe the psychological effects of being out doors, taking in nature and all that?

Nah, it was probably the cafe mocha

“Head on a platter” theology

While going through John 1 today, it occurred to me that I should get more background on John the Baptist. Studying his life, I found myself wrestling with two conflicting facts:

Fact 1: John was declared by Jesus to be the greatest man born of a woman.

I admit that I don’t quite know why Jesus put it that way, but I get the point: John was a regular guy, just like me. Yet he was greater than anyone else before him. That means he was greater than:

· Adam or Eve (yeah, they blew it, but don’t over look all the other great aspects of their lives).

· John was greater than Job (that’s pretty stink’n great).

· John was greater than Abraham. That’s almost too hard to believe. Abraham, the man of faith, the founder of our faith, and the father of the nation of Israel.

· John was even greater than Moses. Right about now Jesus’ listeners–if they were connecting all the dots–should have been getting a little uncomfortable: Greater than Moses, the giver of TORAH, the one who spoke directly with God on several occasions?? Yup. Greater than Moses.

· John was greater than David, the man after God’s own heart.

· He was greater than Samuel, and greater than all of the prophets.

Fact 2: John’s “movement” ended in utter failure when his enemies literally put his head on a platter.

Wait a minute!

John didn’t know (from Max Lucado)

My sister in law sent me the following devotional from, I don’t know where. It is an excellent devotional. I thought it was a good way to start thinking about Easter. Hope you feel the same.

Week of March 30, 2007

On Saturday
by Max Lucado

John didn’t know on that Friday what you and I now know. He didn’t know that Friday’s tragedy would be Sunday’s triumph. John would later confess that he “did not yet understand from the Scriptures that Jesus must rise from the dead” (John 20:9).

That’s why what he did on Saturday is so important. Read more
