“Cafe Mocha” theology

Yesterday, I took my usual and customary walk (well, it’s more or less “usual”). I was praying and thinking and listening to a lot of worship music mainly from Chris Tomlin when I realized something: I’m not anxious right now!

whoa…. that’s … unexpected, and weird (especially in view of my current situation: read “Head on Platter” for more detials). Kind of like peace and a sense that everything’s going to be alright.

It wasn’t exactly what I would call Total Bliss but more the sense that I can handle my situations, because I can really tell that God is here with me.

What brought about this change, I wondered. Hmmm. Could it have been the endorphins raised by the aerobic exercise? Maybe the psychological effects of being out doors, taking in nature and all that?

Nah, it was probably the cafe mocha

Now I know what you’re thinking: “Mocha?!? Dude, you can’t out run a mocha. If you really want to loose some weight you need to give up the mochas.” …. Nope… Not listening … we must have our mocha…. So chocolaty … so beautiful… we wants it! It is our prrrrreciousss……… )

Oh, sorry. Where was I?

Walking, mochas, anxious, peace. Got it. I’m back now.

When you spend a good bit of time considering how great God is and how much He loves you, it’s pretty tough to remain anxious about relatively small things like my precious little career path.

Coffee is a bitter thing.

I can’t stand the stuff, truth be told. I drink it strictly for medicinal purposes: to wake up, to find motivation for yet another day full of TSP reports, to overcome late nights spent reading or writing, all that sort of thing. But you know, a little mocha in the cup sure makes coffee tolerable, even enjoyable.

Worship is the same way.

Worship is the answer to an otherwise bitter situation. Usually it is about the last thing I want to do when I’m anxious, but yesterday worship kind of snuck up on me while listening to great worship songs. I couldn’t help but worship the God of the universe, the same God who has not forsaken me, the same God who went to mind-bending lengths to save me.

Here’s another funny thing about a hardship mixed with worship: it ’stimulates’ spiritual growth. Everyone knows that coffee can really wake you up. Spiritually, so can a hardship. Is life forcing a little “coffee” down your throat? Got a bitter taste in your spirit? Try adding some “mocha.” It really helps. You may even like it, you may even ask for more! James 1:2
